This limitation is Instagram-only. Publishing to your Facebook Page doesn't have this restriction: if a photo doesn't meet Instagram's requirements, you can publish that property choosing "Facebook only".
Aspect ratio (the most frequent cause)
The most common cause of this error is the aspect ratio: the proportion between the photo's width and height. Instagram doesn't accept images that are too wide (panoramic). If your photo is too wide, you'll see an error like "invalid aspect ratio".
The proportions Instagram accepts:
- Horizontal: up to 1.91:1 (photos wider than that are rejected — panoramic ones, for example).
- Square: 1:1.
- Vertical: up to 4:5.
How to fix it: choose a less panoramic photo as the main image, or crop it to a ratio closer to 1:1, 4:5, or 16:9. Photos taken with a phone in normal format usually work; very wide panoramic ones don't.
